Tap2Ride

A New Way to Pay on Public Transit

tap 2 ride logo

Tap2Ride is a simple, flexible way to pay for bus fares across public transit in San Luis Obispo County. Riders can now use contactless payment options (including debit cards, credit cards, and mobile phone wallets) while all existing payment methods continue to be accepted.

Tap2Ride is anticipated to be available on public transit in spring 2026.

What Payment Options Are Accepted?

Tap2Ride works with many convenient payment types, including all those previously accepted – we’re just adding more! Accepted payment types:

  • Contactless debit or credit cards
  • Mobile (phone/smart watch) wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and similar)
  • Bus Passes
  • Token Transit (QR Code)
  • Student Passes/IDs
  • Cash
  • Coming soon: Transit Free Fare Passes for qualifying individuals

If your debit or credit card is not contactless, you can still participate by adding it to a mobile wallet or requesting a contactless card from your bank. Contactless payments are safe and secure.

How It Works

Using Tap2Ride is easy:

Tap once when you board each bus, no need to tap off
Use the same card or device every time to ensure correct fare calculation
Pay as you go, with automatic fare capping that helps your money go further

What are Payment Readers?

Riders can tap their card/phone against a contactless payment reader, should they use that option to ride public transit. The readers are point-of-sale terminals, which allow you to pay your fare and instantly enter the system. Readers will be mounted at the front entrance of each bus and will look like this:

Fare Capping: Save Automatically

With Tap2Ride, riders benefit from regional daily and monthly fare caps. This means you’ll never pay more than the cost of a day or monthly pass when using the same linked card; no need to pre-purchase passes or track spending.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to tap off when exiting the bus?
No. Only tap when boarding.

Should I use the same card every time?
Yes. Using the same card or device ensures proper fare capping and discount application.

Can I use any card and still get my discount?
No. You must use the card or mobile wallet that is linked to your Cal-ITP discount.

What happens if my discount card isn’t working?
Contact https://benefits.calitp.org/ to ensure you are able to receive your discount.

Can I use my smart watch mobile wallet feature to tap onto the bus?
Yes! It works the same way as using your phone to tap to pay.

How do I know if I have a contactless-enabled bank card?
Cards that are contactless-enabled have the following symbol (on the front or the back) of them:

What if my contactless card does not work?
If your card is not working, it may be because:

  • You have a new card (you may still need to activate the card if it’s new – if it’s activated and still not working, please contact the card issuer).
  • Your card issuer has declined payment (there may not be enough funds in the account that the card is drawing from – please check with the card issuer).
  • Your card could be damaged or expired.

Are contactless payments (like Tap2Ride) secure?
Yes. Tap-to-pay payments are processed in the exact same way as all other physical card payments. Contactless cards have the secure EMV® Chip feature, and are proven to diminish instances of counterfeit fraud.

Will my information be kept private?
The cardholder’s personal data is not stored, sold, or given away by transit operators or third-party agents.

Will I be charged a service fee for using my contactless payment on public transit?
No. There are no fees to use Tap2Ride.

Can I pay for more than one person with the same contactless payment method/card?
No. Right now, you may only use your card to pay for yourself. This may be subject to change. If you want to pay for someone else who is traveling with you, you must use a different payment method.

Will it cost more to use Tap2Ride’s contactless payment feature?
No. It will cost the same as any other payment method.
